It is not the same as a quick drain-and-refill, the pump reverses flow through sections of the system to break up debris that has settled where normal circulation cannot reach it. Sludge builds up because corrosion happens inside every heating system to some degree, and without proper inhibitor dosing, that corrosion accumulates as black sediment that settles in the bottom of radiators and narrows the bore of pipework.
